With wedge, the spin is now more a story than ever before with OEM trying to squeeze every revolution from a design as it can.
The New Callaway Opus SP, the next generation of their Wedge Opus line, is no exception, presenting a new rotary pocket design to raise the center of gravity to help players fly lower wedge shots with more rolls.
Here are four things to know about the new Callaway Opus PS wedges, as well as my thoughts on the new short game tools.
1. Rapid Adoption of the tournament
Callaway has one of the most impressive stables of the best with staff such as Jon Rahm, Xander Schauffle, Akshay Bhatia, Min Woo Lee etc. So when you see almost all of them immediately move on to a new product, it’s worth noting.

In the memorial tour two months ago, Callaway had 18 players in the limited event on the field playing a new wedge in its first week in the tournament. Up to the Scottish Open last month, that number was up to 32.
“OPUS SP has been the best instant conversion ever to a Callaway wedge on the tour,” said Zack Oakley, SR manager. Callaway, product strategy and category management. “This was definitely a big step for us, one, we continue to get the adoption of the tour we got with the opus, but also seeing the new technology be proven by the best players in the world.”
A massive aid was Presentation of “Form Six”, Sixth Prototype of OPUS SHAPe, which Jon Rahm put in the game For the first time in the Ryder Cup two years ago. Part of the process was the formation of gap wedges to better flow from the cuff to the lobby wedges.
2. A new rotary pocket
;)
Decent
“PS” in the OPUS SP stands for Spin Pocket which took place from a new two -part construction. Underneath the bottom of the face is an empty cavity created to raise the wedge over the ball, which helps reduce the landing and increase in rotation.
Last year, Callaway experimented with the pocket of rotation in Platinum Product before they finally decided that they needed more time to get it right.
“In early platinum testing, before we put and make our last product, we had this rotary pocket in it, and it was showing signs of something special,” said Callaway R&D manager for Wedges Brian Herr. “Through constant testing, we were able to lead this to masses, to a clean silhouette and a clean product.”
The amount of weight moved above and the pocket size depends on the wedge attic to create a progressive CG design. More weight has been moved with a larger pocket in the lobe wedges and the form and hosel adjustments also help change CG to make it higher in the lobe wedges and the lowest in the deception wedge.
3. Rotation for degrees
;)

Adding the rotation pocket helps Callaway designers maximize the rotation for the wedge scale, which is the rotation divided with the angle of starting a stroke. The lower the departure and the higher the rotation, the more control there is a player over a blow.
Another way that opus spun helps a player raise their rotation for degrees is a new spin 2.0 spin face with a new 17 ° Groove angle with stronger pitch division between grooves and deepest inter-chasing laser pattern.
“We found that this groove is especially better at the longest shooting and has identical performance essentially for our previous groove,” Herr said. “We are seeing a profit on that longer stroke, more stable rotation.”
4. Return IX
;)
Decent
Callaway has been one to respond to gear calls recently, with the release of different Driver’s heads only with tournaments OR Eventual launch in the US of counterfeit x handcuffs.
With Opus SP, Callaway is responding to calls to return the popular x Grind Bounce option to their lobe wedges, last seen in Jaws 2022 raw wedges.
X Grind is a high -winding option with a very close relief of the heel and extreme foot and foot to mix the versatility and forgiveness for a faster shaky player or what plays in milder conditions.
“For what player that is a fast type, maybe it hits a little more, but wants a little more bounce, it still likes to be creative about the greens, we will have it now in the offer,” Oakley said.
My thoughts!
OEM is learning that they can do so much with grooves and facial technology to improve rotation, so they need to become more creative.
Progressive CGs are nothing new in the wedge, but it is interesting to see that Callaway has essentially created a wedge behind the cavity that does not look like one. Unlike a traditional cavity return design, this is undoubtedly more focused on raising CG than weighing the perimeter, but the pocket of rotation is still a cavity essentially.
The return of X Grind should also be a welcome decision for many amateur players – most of whom are steep – but still want to manipulate the face around green.
As a player who is also steep and fights for flight wedges, I am very intrigued by the new design of the rotary pocket and X Grind and I look forward to trying them.
