James Anderson continues to remind the cricketing world why he is regarded as one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time. Leading the charge in Lancashire’s County Championship Division Two clash against Northamptonshire, the 43-year-old seamer produced a spell that felt like a return to his prime.

On the second day at Northampton, Anderson had a brilliant performance finishing with figures of 5 for 64 in just 13 overs. His spell shattered Northamptonshire’s top order, reducing them to a precarious 41 for 5 at the start of the innings. It was a decisive moment that swung the balance of the match firmly in Lancashire’s favour.
Despite some resistance from the lower order, Northamptonshire ended the day at 215 for 9, still outscoring Lancashire’s first innings total of 384 for 169 runs. Anderson was not alone in his efforts as Tom Bailey provided excellent support with three wickets, but it was the skipper who led the attack with precision and control.
It wasn’t just the wickets that stood out, it was Anderson’s possession of them. His ability to swing the ball both ways, hold tight lines and outrun batsmen showed that experience can often trump raw pace.

A milestone that fueled Anderson’s legendary career
The performance marked Anderson’s 56th five-wicket haul in first-class cricket – a milestone that further cemented his legacy. It was also his first five in two years, the previous one coming against Nottinghamshire in 2024, where he took an excellent 7 for 35.
With this achievement, Anderson now stands alongside some of cricket’s most iconic names. He matched the ranking of Richie Benaud, John Snow and others Ravichandran Ashwinplacing him firmly among the elite in the history of the game. His overall first-class numbers are equally impressive – 1,148 wickets in 305 matches – a testament to his longevity and consistency.
The highlight of his spell came when he brought Ricardo Vasconcelos back to hit the stumps with a beautifully worked delivery. It was a classic Anderson wicket built on patience, skill and understanding the conditions.
He then returned to spoil the crucial partnership by removing Louis Kimber, sealing his five goals and effectively ending any hopes of a Northamptonshire recovery.
The match also marked Anderson’s first appearance as Lancashire’s permanent red-ball captain for the 2026 season. Having made his county debut in 2001, he now leads the side with the same determination that defined his playing career. His lead began on a strong note, with Lancashire posting a solid total thanks to contributions from Luke Wells, Josh Bohannon and Michael Jones.
Although Anderson retired from international cricket in 2024, where he finished with a record 704 Test wickets – the most of any fast bowler – Anderson continues to make an impact at domestic level. His passion for the game and commitment to excellence remain unwavering.
