The incident happened in the last ball of the 5th game with a strike by Sean Abbott. Nathan McSweeney dropped a powerful cut on a length delivery. The ball spun backwards, where Smith stood much closer than usual to keep the pressure on.
Known for having some of the best hands in world cricket, Smith reacted with an inverted cup over his head. However, the high speed of the batting resulted in the ball not sticking, much to the frustration of the veteran Australian.
