Washington Sundar’s fitness test date is now known; selectors suspend T20 World Cup backup plans

India’s preparation ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 encountered a potential obstacle with Washington Sundar He will undergo a crucial fitness assessment at the BCCI Center of Excellence in Bengaluru on February 4. The Test comes just three days before India begin their World Cup campaign on February 7 and leaves little margin for error with the spin bowling all-rounder’s availability.

Washington was sidelined during the first ODI against New Zealand on January 11 after suffering a side strain and his recovery is reportedly taking longer than initially expected.

Washington Sundar’s injury recovery is taking longer than expected

According to a TOI report, Washington’s rehabilitation has progressed cautiously, with the BCCI preferring not to rush his comeback. While the Indian board has not officially disclosed the nature of the injury, sources suggest that the all-rounder sustained a hamstring tear near the rib cage.

A BCCI source revealed that Washington did not take part in any intensive training during the recent session at the Center of Excellence, stressing the need for natural healing before continuing with the return-to-play process. ““Washington’s injury should heal naturally before returning to the game.” the source said.

The upcoming fitness test is expected to clarify whether he will be ready in time for the tournament.

The selection committee is awaiting a medical update on Sundar before making backup plans

Despite the uncertainty, India’s selectors and team management are willing to wait for an official medical update before finalizing their contingency plans. Teams have until January 30 to make changes to their squads, although injury changes may still be allowed during the tournament if approved by the technical committee.

India are scheduled to gather for their first training session in Mumbai on February 3, with a warm-up match against South Africa on February 4 – the same day Washington is due to conduct a fitness test.

While Sundar remained under observation, other members of the team continued their preparations. Tilak Varma recently appeared in a simulation match at the Center of Excellence to highlight his readiness for the upcoming ICC tournament.

Despite Sundar’s sporting concerns, the team balance remains stable

Although Sundar’s fitness is in doubt, the Indian team management is confident about the overall balance of the squad. Vice-captain Akhar Patel He has featured in just one match in the ongoing T20I series against New Zealand, but the team looks determined and composed.

Rian Parag internally, he is viewed as a similar replacement for Washington in terms of skill set, offering rotation and hitting flexibility. Despite the absence of a spin-bowling all-rounder in recent matches, India have managed to maintain balance in their combinations.

Sundar’s last call may not depend on his immediate availability, but on his recovery time.
