Want to play the old reverse course? You better hurry!

For the third year running, St Andrews Links Trust is giving you the chance to play the old reverse course.

As in BACKWARDas originally intended.

“Opportunity” might be a generous word. More specifically, St Andrews Links Trust is taking raffle entries for the Old Course Reversed package. The Old Reverse Course weekend is scheduled for April 17-20 next year.

However, if you want to apply, you better hurry. The sweepstakes closes tomorrow at 10am (5am EST) Greenwich Mean Time.

So I wouldn’t push it if I were you.

What is the old reverse course?

Before Old Tom Morris rebuilt and re-directed it in 1870, The old course played completely backwards from how we know it today. You would move away from the traditional putting green, but instead of playing to the first green, you would play to 17th (Road Hole) green. Then you would leave the 18thth The tee box is now and I play until the 16thth green. You end the round by leaving the second box and playing to 18th green.

When played in that configuration, many of the old bunkers that are out of play when the course is normally played suddenly come into play and make more sense.

Starting in 2023, St Andrews Links Trust has offered an early season The old course reversed special and has proven to be very popular. Golfers travel from all over the world to play with more than 600 players taking advantage of this opportunity last year alone.

How the lottery works

You will have to go to St Andrews Links Trust website to apply. You will also need to apply as a two or four and names and emails are required for each golfer. The Trust will then notify you by email if you have been selected.

The package itself can be one of the best deals Links Trust has to offer. For £800 per person (just over US$1,000), you get two rounds on the old course – one reverse, one conventional. You also get a third round on the St Andrews Castle course. The package also includes a £65 ($86) food and drink voucher per person. Free range balls at the St Andrews practice center are also included.

Transportation and hotel are not included.

We got to play The Old Course Reversed last year and it was a great time. However, it was in Toptracer-equipped driving range at The Oaks Golf Complex in Somersworth, NH We look forward to Toptracer offering The Old Course Reversed again this coming spring.

As mentioned, if you want to apply, you should do so as soon as the application process ends tomorrow morning. There are likely hundreds of thousands of applications for just a few hundred spots.

But as the old saying goes, you can’t win if you don’t play.
