On Saturday night, Canelo Alvarez successfully defended his unified super middleweight crown against Edgar Berlanga. The fight was a complete and total mismatch, as many expected going in.
Canelo was simply too smart, too skilled, too clever, too consistent and too experienced for Berlanga. To his credit, Berlanga put in a valiant and admirable effort, but he was no match for Canelo.
Since losing to Dmitry Bivol in May 2022, Canelo hasn’t been involved in many fights that have fans particularly excited. The most interesting matchup was his third fight against Golovkin, but by then GGG was getting older and on the slide. After that win, Canelo beat Jon Ryder, undisputed 154 pound champion Jermell Charlo, Jaime Munguia, and most recently the win against Berlanga.
After his win against Berlanga, on the DAZN broadcast they presented three logical options for Canelo’s next opponent: Terence Crawford, Dmitry Bivol and David Benavidez.

Benavidez has been the fight many fans have wanted for years now, but for various reasons it hasn’t come together, and that seems unlikely to change anytime soon. A potential rematch against Bivol is something Canelo has expressed interest in, provided Bivol wins his upcoming October 12 bout against Artur Beterbiev that will be for the undisputed light heavyweight crown. A fight between Canelo and Crawford is something Turki Al-Sheikh expressed interest in, until he apparently lost interest after hearing Canelo’s demands, but it’s a fight Crawford still wants, despite the fact that he had never fought at 160, let alone 168, and Crawford only had one fight at 154.
