The initial attraction for a fight between Eubank JR and Conor Benn was largely based on the success of every man’s father, where the prospect almost acted like a quasi-judgment of their fathers’ previous rivalry. Eubank Jr. of course is the son of Chris Eubank, former WBO champion at both middleweight and dinner in the middle. On the other hand, Benn is the son of Nigel Benn, who also held the WBO belt at the middleweight, and he was also the WBC Super Middleweight Champion. These former champions with two divisions fought twice, only in 1990, when Eubank won the WBO middleweight title against Benn. After that, they fought again in 1993, this time in a unification at Super Middleweight, where Eubank and Benn each retained their respective WBO and WBC titles after the rematch ended in a draw.
The two boys were originally scheduled to fight in October 2022, but a few days before the fight was supposed to take place, Benn tested positive for a banned substance and the fight was postponed technically afterwards. Now that this has finally happened, it has exceeded expectations and eventually developed into a bona fide struggle of the year candidate.
