Their first fight back in May was a highly entertaining and competitive encounter. At the end of 12 competitive rounds, Usyk was awarded a split decision victory, marking him as the first undisputed world heavyweight champion during the modern 4-belt era, and the first undisputed world heavyweight champion since the great Lennox Lewis last held that distinction . in the year 2000.
Many observers were critical of Fury’s trainer, Sugar Hill. The fight was close enough that many believe that Fury’s corner should have emphasized a greater sense of urgency in the later rounds of the fight, especially as Fury was battered all over the ring when Usyk scored a knockdown in round 9. At best, the fight was in the balance going into the championship rounds, but most observers believed Fury was behind going into the 11th and 12th rounds.
At the recent press conference for Usyk-Fury 2, Sugar Hill seemed to realize his mistake, when he said: “Everybody’s saying the right things, it was a great fight. It’s good for boxing and all that. The only thing I have to say is that in life you learn from mistakes. You learn in life, and you have to improve yourself. So that’s about it.”
