Vergil Ortiz vs. Boots Ennis Is The Fight To Make

Fort Worth, Texas – Vergil Ortiz Jr. (24-0, 22 KOs) demolished the Ring’s number five ranked junior middleweight, Erickson Lubin (27-3, 19 KOs) at the Dickies Arena on Saturday night. He demonstrated defensive prowess, making Lubin miss and getting hit with just seven punches in the short two-round match.

Offensively, he dominated Lubin, landing 61 percent of his power punches and scoring the technical knockout against the wily veteran (Compubox). After the match, Jaron “Boots” Ennis came into the ring and confronted Vergil. It was reminiscent of the Gennady Golovkin-Canelo Alvarez fight in 2017, when the two did it in the center of the ring after the Canelo Alvarez-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

During the face off, Boots and Vergil went back and forth: “Your manager already talked crazy, Oscar talked crazy, this is the time. I’m going to make you pay for everything they say,” is what Boots told Ortiz during their verbal exchange. Vergil responded by saying, “No one here is going to pay.” They went on like this for a while until they came face to face.

Both fighters want the fight; they want to show who is the better of the two. However, to finalize it, both sides must mutually agree on the terms of the match. Oscar De La Hoya said after Ortiz’s victory: “If we don’t get favorable negotiations, then we can always go to Errol Spence or we can go to (Sebastian) Fundora, so there are a lot of options for Vergil. I know the world wants to see Boots Ennis versus Vergil, but let’s get one thing right here.”, Vergil is the man. When Oscar says he’s the man, he’s referring to Ortiz being the A-side fighter and being paid as such.

Richard Mirigian, Vergil’s manager, expressed similar sentiments via social media. He had several exchanges with fans and media members on X (Twitter). Discusses various items, from the potential asking price of $10 million to Vergil as the A-side fighter. Rick reiterated that if the conditions were favorable, the battle would be fought. In one particular exchange with Dan Cannobio, he reacts to the possibility of making an Ortiz-Errol Spence fight, “What I said was there are a lot of big fights, Spence in Texas is BIG, Charlo, Fundora and Xander, but Boots is the fight we make if the offer is legal and right, Boots will be prioritized to make, but it will depend on the value of the writer, and we know what is coming. A financial standpoint is there for them to make make and I know the numbers better than most at this level, if it’s in the super fight numbers area it’s done without a doubt.”

Both Matchroom and Golden Boy work with sports streaming provider DAZN, so there should be no conflict with the broadcast of the match. Both sides want what is best for their fighter, and favorable conditions for both are essential. A lot of the superfights we’ve seen lately have been because of Turki Alalshikh; he may be needed to finalize this one as well. There is a lot of fan interest and demand for the fight, so aside from it being something that needs to be worked out monetarily, it needs to be a fight that needs to be made, especially if the fighters themselves want the fight. Both Ortiz and Boots know what the fight will do for their career and where it will place them if they win, among the elite in the sport.
