I’m no golf teacher (and don’t pretend to be), but I’d argue that mastering the weight shift in the golf swing is the most important part of the whole thing! This may be a bold statement that invites criticism, but if you are not shifting your weight properlyyou have no chance of hitting a good shot.

Of course, square of the club site hitting the ball cleanly is the name of the game, but you can’t do that if you’re hanging or leaning too far forward as you hit the shot. When you make one of these mistakes, your angle of attack is off and you’re not finding the low point of the club. This leads to shrapnel or skull shots — that no player likes to experience.

So what’s a good way to put the right weight shift into your golf swing? Believe it or not, using a water bottle!

Remember that, I’m not a golf instructor? Since I don’t have the credentials to explain why this works, I’ll allow it GOLF Top 100 Teachers Jason Baile does it in the video below (courtesy of Titleist’s YouTube channel).

How a water bottle will improve your weight shift in the golf swing

“If you’re one of those people who just sits back and doesn’t move your lower body fast enough, here’s a great workout for you,” says Baile.

Baile says to simply place a water bottle on the inside of your foot, assume your normal address position, and work on moving your lower body from back to front in the golf swing — “not necessarily the back,” he adds.

“We want to move (your lower half) very early on the downswing, moving the pressure from the inside of the (track leg) onto the (lead leg), allowing the track leg to drop and try to knock that bottle water from the impact,” Baile explains.

Next, Baile explains how to distribute your weight in the setup, using a little more force on that lead leg, before shifting it during the takeoff.

“Feel like there’s a little pressure on (the lead leg), maybe 55 percent, and move it to the trail leg on the backswing,” he says. “Use that pressure to load the back and shift the pelvis down to the left before the club hits the golf ball.”

With instant feedback from the water bottle, you’ll be able to master your footwork, improve weight shift in the golf swing, and find the low point of the club more consistently in the swing. So give this a try on your next visit to the range.
