In the 45th edition of the Ryder Cup, the American team will, for the seventh consecutive time, sports uniforms made by the American quintesential design giant Ralph Lauren. How is it to have a task of creating stylish patriotic looks year after year? Explains David Lauren, chief of brand and company innovation, explains.
Golf: How do you start the design process for a Ryder Cup uniform, and how does the process differ from other major events like the Olympics? What is your main consideration?
David Lauren: This year, with the Ryder Cup returning to New York, our hometown is especially special. The location of the tour is always where we start, and we have had to create a look and feel that it builds a patriotic American team and also captures that unique New York energy. We wanted to create eternal and stylish views that honor our country and the legacy of the game. You will see classic pieces and more parts of the statements. These are some of the best players in the world and they represent our country in a global scene – they must look and feel their absolute best.
G: In addition to pure appearance and cohesive, uniforms must also perform the highest level. How do you make sure each part performs the way you aim? What, in your opinion, can make or ruin a uniform of Ryder Cup?
Dl: When we develop our collection, we really think about what the players need during the intense match game. We work with our players in collaboration during the development months to prove and perfect the function of our parts. Everything is so thoughtful to move perfectly with the player’s swinging. Really really to hit that perfect balance between innovation and the technical parts of the creation of tradition they perform, always with the sophisticated and timeless appearance for which we are known.
G: What do you learn from the players who enter the equipment, and how are those lessons in the final product?
Dl: We have been lucky enough to work with some of the biggest golf players, from Tom Watson to Davis Love III and now Keegan Bradley. Their reactions have been essential in the development of our products, whether they are the correct cutting of pants or the correct painting of a polo. Once we actually made Tom Watson get into the shower to try our latest rain dresses. This is the level of details we enter.
G: The uniform collection of the 2021 Ryder Cup introduced a famous Kashmir hood, which appeared in 2023 and returned this year as well. Can you describe his viral attraction?
Dl: Hoodie Cashmere from 2021 really differs. It is amazing to see how people have hugged that part. I think it catches what we try to do in Ralph Lauren – take something classic like a cashmere sweater and reimony it for modern golf players. Its popularity shows how the golf style has evolved – pieces that feel luxurious but are difficult and functional both on the course and outside the course.
G: In 2023, we saw many color jams and stripes for the days of competition. This year, stripes are a little closer, and you have introduced a new entertainment print to honor New York. Can you speak to us through your design inspiration? Which part of the collection do you expect to sell faster this year, and why?
Dl: Throughout the collection there are many details celebrating the Ryder Cup returning to New York. It is all about catching that energy and unique attitude. Satin Tour jacket is especially special. The 13th shirt, a man show in fans like the “13th player” in the team, is a part of the entertainment statements that capture the energy of New York sports fans and will also be a favorite among Bethpage fans.
