How will the Oakmont hold against the best players in the world?
Usga
Check every week for the unjustified thoughts of our writers and editors as they break down the hottest themes in this sport, and join in the conversation by tweaking us on Twitter @golf_com. This week, discuss the next week’s US Open, what to expect from Oakmont as a place and more.
125 of US Open starts on Thursday at Oakmont country club Outside Pittsburgh, Pa., With Scottie Scheffler and Rory Mcilroy – winners of the first two diplomas of the year – as betting favorites. We will reach them, but first, what is your favorite Oakmont scene that NOT Include the above -mentioned duet?
Josh Sens, elderly writer (@Jossens). Love it or not, Bryson dechambeau has become the most reliable player reliably in diplomas. He said he would return to his Tinkerer’s workshop in front of the US open. It will be interesting to see what tricks he attracts to Oakmont, not to mention his brutal power in such a bold course.
Dylan Dothier, old writer (@dylan_Dethier) :: I’m with sense – Bryson’s week will be interesting. He’s playing so well, he was running the ball so well, he won last year US Open and the Brawny Winged Foot test, too, plus he has new handcuffs in the game … He will order a lot of attention. But I find myself attracted to the US Ryder Cup team and its potential members. There are suddenly only two diplomas, which means if some players in the 7-15 rank have a big week, Bethpage may suddenly include a player we would not have thought at the beginning of the year. Ben Griffin? Jj spaun? Tom Hoge? Or, of course, Keegan Bradley?
Zephyr Melton, Assistant Editor (@Zephyrmelton) :: The love that Bryson gets – it’s always a pleasure to see what kind of tricks he has his sleeves for the major. My favorite scene to follow will be how the course plays. We all know that Oakmont is a brutal, and early reports suggest that the note may be high. I can’t wait to see how the best in the world treats it.
Scheffler enters the week after winning three of his last four, but still should not win a US Open. Does it make an open test, crazy, like Oakmont against a group of birds of birds elsewhere, actually improves its chances of winning, or does it push it closer to the field?
Sense: The cream tends to grow in difficult courses. The only part of the game that sometimes Bedevils Scheffler is its placement, and Oakmont greens are challenging of the next level. But I suspect this week will only highlight the bay between Scheffler and almost everyone.
Dethier: In general, it should improve its chances, given that it is doing everything well at the moment. But it will be interesting to look at Scheffler – and the rest of the field! – Go to the mental test of what can be the most difficult golf course in the world. Scheffler’s mental game is generally scary, but he goes hot. I am excited when I see it treat such a brutal configuration.
Melton: Scottie is not a small horse. He is acquired in Birdie-Fests (Byron Nelson) and Slogs (memorial), so I would not say that any particular composition would affect his chances. That said, I will be surprised if he is not in the mixture to come on Sunday.
After operating its season with a high-20th finish in all eight start-up-including three win-ore Mcilroy was tied for 47 to the PGA and enters this week out of a 71-78 logging in the RBC Canadian Open. A disturbing trend? Or a two exterior? How does Rory’s game translate to Oakmont?
Sense: When Rory is ongoing, his game translates into every course. But the latest signs have been disturbing. The irregular discs he is hitting late will not work in Oakmont. Complex that with some mcilroy comments has made about its levels of motivation after Augusta, and I would not choose it up in an office pool.
alacrity: Mcilroy’s journey to Canada was weird from start to end. I was more struck by one thing he said at his press conference in front of the tournament: “You have this event in your life for which you worked and it happens, sometimes it is difficult to find the motivation to get back to horse and go back.” It is very clear that he is experiencing a reflected type of post-media. When will he withdraw from him? Professional golf is the latest grind and US Open is threefold; I’m sure he is still eager to fight and win, but if he is a little else, that’s enough to throw everything. We will get a good sense of Mcilroy’s game this week – his swing, his mind, his quarrel.
Melton: Comedown after the high level of finishing Grand Slam career seems to have caught him with – and can you blame him? A burden over a decade in doing was finally rose. I can see how it would fall from that hurry would do rock re-encompassing. With Rory’s talent, he is a threat to win almost every week, but the way his game has been in tendency, I would put my money for someone else next week.
While in Canada, Mcilroy spoke to the media for the first time since his pre-Turneut press conference in PGA, explained why he did not meet with reporters after his rounds in Quail Hollow (“A little bit of a strange week”) and added a context on the failed driver’s story (he was raised in Scheffer’s Name. discovered). What were your thoughts on Rory’s comments and how did you pack the situation?
sense: He was typical of thoughtful, especially when talking about his disappointment to be separated and not wanting to throw Scheffler’s name in the conversation. All this made sense. But otherwise, his reasoning of not talking to reporters did not sit well. Of course, technically, he was not required to stop near the podium. But it is still a weak shape to blow up the press. It takes only a few minutes to ask a few questions – a small price to pay the shameful money he makes.
Rory Mcilroy driver, media comments offer windows in his mind
alacrity: Mcilroy MUST They have talked to the media in the PGA, not because he “owes us” or anything else, but like a tactical decision, to make some air from the balloon. With this he said, if you are using this driver scenario as a kind of note against Mcilroy is because you already did not like him or you are deliberately misunderstanding the situation. There are many people in both of those camps, so this will continue to swim in social media comments sections across the platforms – but he opened the situation and, in addition to reviewing driver testing protocols, I think we should all go further.
Melton: Rory could have checked the narrative if he would only give him a few minutes of his time in the press in Quail Hollow. On the contrary, this is STILL A story scenario a month later. I can understand his disappointment about the information that flows into the press, but he just threw fuel on the fire by fantasizing the media.
Many will be said and written this week about the difficulty of Oakmont, one of the five USA’s US anchor courses that are preparing to organize a 10th national record champion. Is Oakmont best USA open country?
Sense: It is my personal favorite from a design point of view. But tournaments are also fun on television. And it is very difficult to lead images from spots like Pebble Beach and Shinnecock. And the last I have checked, Pjnehurst has produced some very electric finishes. Not trying to be with an old mouth. Let’s say it is best for them to rotate the host cheeks.
Dethier: This will be my first week at Sit in Oakmont, who has fired me and I will be able to answer better at the end of the week. But my instinct is yes In what seems like the open test of the US that is more open, if that makes sense. We can argue if Greater Pittsburgh is in Midwest later this week, but there is something special about a club stored in American Heartland with brutal, funny and strata of the soul that evokes the soul.
Melton: Of course it suits the brave test mold that USA likes to present. Whether it’s best or not for debate, but it’s definitely there. I can’t wait to see the massacre.
Ok, enough for scottie, rory, intricate and rough greens. Who is a sleep to see in Oakmont?
Sense: Harris English has three 10 in the ball in its last five openings of the US. He has also been in a pretty good shape. At 100-1, it is a good noise for your office pool.
alacrity: Sense stole my man. I am also high in Keegan Bradley (drowsiness, if not full of Dark Horse), Cameron Young, (who left the 72nd hole in the RBC Canadian Open in a state he described as “a lot of anger” but must be well placed), and Max Grayerman, just cuz.
Melton: No love for Ben Griffin?! He is in the tendency, as well as someone in the past month, who means he doesn’t hold it?
