Swiss meets, from Lausanne to Zurich, hold a special place in the hearts of US athletes. 2024 was no exception, and here are some notable performances from our top U.S. athletes at these prestigious events.
Erion Knighton is second behind Letsile Tebogo, Tebogo in 19.64 and Knighton in 19.78. In the 100 meters, Olympic bronze medalist Fred Kerley finished third with a time of 19.86. Fred told the media in Lausanne that he would only retire once he had an Olympic gold medal in his drawer. (Fred Curley also re-signed with NIKE after a brief stint with ASICS).
Two Americans in the men’s 400m, won by Matthew Hudson-Smith (43.96). Bryce Didmon was 4th in 44.37 and Vernon Norwood was 5h 44.55. Both Bryce and Vernon were part of the US gold medal winning 4×400 meter relay team in Paris.
Bryce Hoppel (USA), was 4th in the men’s 800m in 1:42.63, beating Emmanuel Vanyon, KEN, who ran MR and WL in 1:41.11.
In the men’s 1500m, Olympic champion Cole Hawker was second in 3:29.85 and Hobbs Kessler was third in 3:30.47. Jakob Ingebrigtsen won the 1500m in 3:27.83.
Men’s 110 m hurdles had a surprise. Rasheed Broadbell, JAM, won the 110m, upsetting Olympic champion Grant Holloway, 13.10-13.14. Olympic silver medalist Daniel Robert took 4th place with a time of 13.26. Cordell Tinsch, who just missed Paris, was sixth in 13:34.
Olympic silver medalist Sam Kendricks was second at 5.92m to Mondo Duplantis, SWE, who cleared 6.15m, possibly the highest ever in street jumping. Jacob Wooten, a member of the Olympic team, was 9th at 5.62 meters. Olympic Trials champion Chris Nielsen fell a bit short at 5.52m.
In the long jump, Mitlitadis Tentoglu, GRE, has maintained a record of over 8 meters in every meet all season, and he did so with a final attempt of 8.06m in Lausanne. Jeremiah Davis was 8th at 7.80m and Jarrion Lawson was 9th at 7.69m.
On the women’s side, Dina Asher-Smith won the 100m in a fantastic 10.87. Tamari Davis (USA) was second with 10.97.
In the women’s deep 800m, Mary Moraa won KEN in 1:57.91, USA’s Nia Akins (USA) 10th in 2:00.0 and Ellie Wilson 11th in 2:00.35. They both looked a little burnt out.
Elise Cranny was 4th in the 3000m, beating Diribe Velteji, ETH, 8:21.50. Elise set the AR 3000m in 8:25.10. Carissa Schweitzer was 7th in 8:34.96.
Jasmine Camacho-Quinn won the 100m hurdles in a tight 12.35. Grace Stark (USA) was second in 12.38 and Alaisha Johnson (USA) was sixth in 12.59.
Shamier Little had his worst 400m hurdles of the year, finishing eighth in 58.57. Femke Ball won in 52.25 minutes.
Chase Jackson, who had a very difficult Paris Olympics, won with 20.64m. USA’s Raven Saunders was fourth with 19.08m. Maggie Ewen (USA) was seventh with 18.60m and Adelaide Aquila, USA, was ninth with 17.62m.
