Turki Alalshikh says the Edgar Berlanga against Hamzah Sheeraz Super Middeeight Headliner “can change everything” and one of them will leave “with the belt” on July 12. Fans are confused and wonder what title Berlanga (23-1.18 COs) and Sheeraz (21-0-1, 17 COs) are fighting in their 12-round competition at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, New York. Turki said this week that Sheeraz or Chris Eubank jr. Next February against Canelo Alvarez will fight.
Berlanga vs. Sheeraz Belt Doubt
Officially, Berlanga-Heeraz is a WBC 168-pound world title eliminator to determine a mandatory for champion Canelo Alvarez. So, unless a lesser-known belt is at stake next month, it’s just a title eliminator. There are many boxing fans who believe that Berlanga and Hamzah do not deserve to have a chance to earn a world title.
The 168 pound division was weakened by the departure of David Banavidez and David Morrell when they moved up to 175 in 2024. However, there are other fighters who deserve to position a world shot without using the retreads, Berlanga and Sheeraz.
Berlanga, 27, lost against Canelo last year by a running 12-round decision in September, and he has only fought once and beat a 35-year-old Jonathan Gonzalez Organ last March. It wasn’t a good win for Edgar to position himself for another crack at Canelo.
Sheeraz arrives in a widely criticized 12 round in February against WBC middleweight champion Carlos Adames. He worked out and eradicated by champion Adames. Many people were shocked when the judges achieved it as a draw, because Adames appeared to have won 11-1 in a one-sided competition.
