Turki Alalshikh studies boxing system

“He’s studying how the system works over this side of the wall, across the States, and then he’s going to make his own move,” Nelson told iFL TV. “He just wants one belt.”

Turki Alalshikh has already become one of boxing’s most influential financial backers through his involvement in major events. The chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority has helped fund several high-profile fights while working with promoters across the sport.

Nelson believes the approach could eventually affect how championships are organized.

For decades, boxing’s titles were divided among various sanctioning bodies, with each group recognizing its own champion in the same weight class. The result is multiple belts in one division and constant debate about who really sits on top.

Nelson indicated Turki’s long-term interest may involve simplifying that structure.

“He just gets all his ducks in order,” Nelson said. “He understands how everyone works.”

Turki has already shown a willingness to work with different promoters and networks while supporting major fight cards in Saudi Arabia. His involvement helped bring together fighters and promoters who often operate in separate lines of business.

Those partnerships included collaborations with competing promoters and broadcast outlets that historically operated separately. Major Saudi-backed cards also drew fighters from various promotional groups to the same event.

Nelson sees the current period as preparation for a bigger play.

Whether a one-band system can ever take off remains another question. The four major sanctioning bodies will still exist, and their titles will still be recognized unless broadcasters choose to ignore them.

That kind of shift would likely require networks like DAZN to focus exclusively on events built around the Ring belt. For now, that scenario seems hard to imagine.

Turki has already become one of the sport’s central financial figures. Turki has the resources to impact boxing, but turning a four-belt sport into a one-belt system will be a different battle altogether.
