Tsehai Gemechu was suspended for four years for doping



The Ethiopian distance runner was suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit in November.

Tsehai Gemechu, who ran over 10,000 meters and ran a marathon best of 2:16:56 at the Tokyo Olympics, has been banned for four years for doping.

He was Ethiopian has been provisionally suspended by the Department of Athletics Integrity in November due to “abnormalities” in the biological passport.

After nearly a year of investigation, the AIU concluded that there was “overwhelming evidence of some form of blood manipulation”.

Not only was Gemechu banned for four years, but his results from March 22, 2020 to November 30, 2023 will also be disqualified.

That includes her runner-up finish in the 2023 Tokyo Marathon, where Gemechu became just the eighth woman in history to go under 2:17 for 26.2 miles.

Gamechu’s results in the 10,000m at the Tokyo Olympics and the marathon at the 2023 World Championships would have been the same, but he DNF’d in both races.

The 25-year-old boasts personal bests of 14:29.60 for the 5000m, 30:19.29 for the 10000m and 65:01 for the half marathon.

Gemechu also finished fourth in the 5000m at the 2019 World Championships and was part of the Ethiopian team that won the senior title at the World Championships in Denmark.
