You’ve probably heard it: “I will simply hit the 3-herald from tee because it is safer.” For years, I wondered if this logic was true. The lowest packed iron I have ever put in the bag was a 4-Hakuri and for me I never felt like an alternative to a road or a driver outside.
I began to ask how many players actually hit a 3-time? Most importantly, is it really the “security option” they make it to be? To find out, I returned to the goal data.
Use: Almost no one holds it
Who is even using a 3-when?
According to the goal shot, only 5-11 percent of players players hold a 3-i hea. Use does not score a little among one-digit players, but scratch players are not reaching for it. One of the most difficult clubs in the bag to hit constantly, and most players have learned that more forgiving options like hybrids and straight forests are simply easier to work with.
Performance: shorter and less accurate
If you have loved clear numbers as to why the 3-Hakuri is hurting compared to the help, it is easier to look at the hit and the distance of fairways.
- Fairways Hit (FIR): only 22–47%And even Scratch Golfers fight to find half the roads with a 3-Herkuri.
- Distance: Average performance decreases about 213 yards. Compare it with a driver at 285 yards and a 3-drunt in 261 yards, and the gap becomes visible.
If you are reaching out to a 3-time out of the “accuracy” waiting, the data does not support them. It is not finding the short grass constantly, and is giving up from a lot to be a practical alternative to a driver or road wood.
Grade: No advantage to driver
The real test is if it helps you mark. Spoiler: No.
In par 4s, players who use a 3-hook out of tee actually score worse than those who use a driver in most handicap groups.
- Higher handicaps: +0.2 to +0.5 strokes worse for 3-hook hole.
- One-digit/scratch: Basically there is no difference, with the zero players who win alone 0.03 strokes– A very small difference for importance.
So even the best ball attackers do not see an advantage of the note. If anything, the driver proves just as safe while offering much more stubborn.
Why does the myth continue
Then why do players still believe in 3-Iron?
- Tradition: Older generations grew up playing long handcuffs before the hybrids became flowing.
- Perception: Smaller head and lower attic look Like control, but that does not mean the results are ongoing.
- Stubborn habit: Golfists trust what feels comfortable, even when numbers say differently.

3-Hekuri once had its place in the game, but modern data make a strong case against it:
- Very few their players keep it.
- Is no more accurate than the driver or forests.
- Does not save strokes.
If you are looking for control and durability, the smartest movement is the 3rd exchange for a hybrid or way out. The “security” of the 3rd is more of myth than the reality.
