“Tottenham must be better at managing the game”

Tottenham manager Robert Vilahamn has said his squad must be better at “game management” as they prepare to face Liverpool in the WSL this weekend.

The north London club are currently third in the table two games into the new season. Their four points so far are the same as Arsenal and Manchester City.

Spurs came away from their opener with a win against newly-promoted Crystal Palace but struggled to stay ahead after scoring early in their last encounter with Aston Villa, which ended 2-2.

Speaking about the team’s performance, Vilahamn said: “We should have finished that game but we ended up with a bit of miscommunication and (Villa) scored at the end.

“Game management is one of the things we have to improve and look at how we can win these games 2-0, instead of 1-0. We have to look at how we can be really sharp in the last few minutes.”

Although Liverpool are seventh in the table after successive 1-1 draws, Vilahamn has praised the “power and strength” the Reds have. “You can never sleep and we have to be working until the last second. They have a coach (Matt Beard) who makes sure they never give up.”

After Spurs take on the Merseyside club, they will face Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City in the following weeks.

“I think it will be very interesting to have a lot of these games in a row because I think we want to improve in these games,” Vilahamn reflected.

“People don’t expect us to win all these games, but they do expect us to be better than last season. We’ll make sure we compete and once they’re over we can take stock and ask ourselves if we were ready or not.

“And if we are, we’ll be in a good position in the table, and if we’re not, we’ve got to make sure we take the quick steps to fix that during the season. So it’s more about getting a answer where we are and where we’re going We know we have a good chance to play good football and compete like last season and that’s the difference.”

There is a lot of excitement surrounding forward Jessica Naz right now, especially after she made her debut for the Lionesses earlier this year. His goal was instrumental in helping Spurs to a win over Charlton in their League Cup group stage opener in midweek.

Assessing her performance and her future, Vilahamn said: “I think her X factor is one of the best in the league. She is very strong, powerful and quick and has the ability to be a top player in this league and in this country. It is still very young and we are working hard to be consistent with it.

“I think it’s about giving him time to grow into that role and not expecting him to score goals every game, but to contribute to the team.

“I don’t see any other player in this league who can compete with her.”
