Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min looks set to stay at the club beyond the end of this season thanks to an option to extend his contract, a new report has confirmed.
Son signed his current deal with Spurs in 2021, a four-year contract until the summer of 2025, with no mention of a 12-month option disclosed at the time.
But the telegraph report that the Spurs have that option and intend to use it. It is not mutual and you only need to inform Son that the clause has been activated.
What it means is that Son, who joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, will surpass ten years with the north London club. At 32, the South Korean superstar is in the latter stages of his career but is still producing the good after scoring 17. Premier League goals last season.
He has three to his name so far in 2024/25 and is on course to reach double figures in the league for the ninth consecutive season, a run of consistency that began in 2016.
The son initially struggled when he arrived spurs. He scored or assisted just three times in his first 25 Premier League appearances and started just 13 league games. This prompted him to ask to leave the club in 2016 after just one season.
“I was about to leave,” Son said Evening Standard three years later, by which time he was well established. “I went to the gaffer’s office and told him that I didn’t feel comfortable and that I wanted to go to Germany,” he added, referring to a conversation with Mauricio Pochettino.
Pochettino convinced the player it was in his best interests to stay and he bounced back the following season with 21 goals in all competitions, which remains his third-best record in a Spurs shirt. Today, it’s 165 goals in 417 appearances for Son, who was named club captain in 2023.
