Jaime Munguia takes on France’s Bruno Surace in the 10-round main event tonight in a 169-lb catchweight bout live on ESPN+ at the Estadio Caliente in Tijuana, Mexico. The event begins at 9:00 PM ET on ESPN+.

The 28-year-old Munguia (44-1, 28 KOs) is looking to get a quick rematch with Canelo Alvarez after losing to him on May 4th. Munguia has fought once since then, stopping fringe contender Erik Bazinyan in the tenth round on September 20.

Picasso (30-1, 16 KOs) is expected to be the next challenger for undisputed super bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue if he prevails against Cuello (13-2-2, 11 KOs) in their 10-round co-fight tonight.
Munguia has an easy fight tonight against Surace (25-0-2, 4 KOs). None of the four sanctioning bodies place Surace in the top 15. The reason for that is clear: Surace’s opposition was weak.
It is unclear why the Top Rank chose this opponent for Munguia rather than a top contender. If the idea is to make Munguia look good and ensure he doesn’t get beaten by anyone to ruin his chances for a rematch with Canelo, matching him up against fighters like Surace and Bazinyan makes sense.
Ideally, Munguia should show courage by taking on the top contenders at 168 to speed up the process of a rematch with Canelo, but he is too vulnerable to do so. Munguia didn’t even look good in his last game against Bazinyan.
If Munguia was ambitious and willing to take a risk, he would fight these guys to earn the rematch with Alvarez:

Munguia is not expected to fight any of these fighters. It’s business. His next fight will likely be against Edgar Berlanga, who he has said he is interested in fighting. Berlanga is on the same talent level as Bazinyan and an easy mark for Munguia or any of the fighters on the roster.
