Saturday’s Presidents Cup is heating up. What two days ago looked set to be another American clash has changed drastically over the past 48 hours as the internationals have battled and refused to let up against the heavily favored Americans.
It’s been fun too. Tom Kim and Scottie Scheffler added some energy to the event on Thursdayand a work-obsessed Kim assembled his team on Friday.
And the 22-year-old Kim, who was a key player and emotional leader for the Internationals on his Presidents Cup debut two years ago, was back at it on Saturday.
With the Internationals trailing the USA 8-6 after the morning session, Tom and partner Si Woo Kim were 2 under against Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele through six holes in the afternoon foursome. Playing the par-3 7th, Tom Kim rolled a three-footer to save the par-3 and tie the hole, but it turns out he wasn’t too happy about having to bogey.
After making the layup, Kim scooped the ball out of the hole and then extended his putter, universal sign e are you kidding me – you guys made me do this? Clearly pissed, he looked around, shrugged, and was still barking at her as he walked off the green.
Cantlay and Schauffele, however, did not appear to see Kim, as their backs were turned.
“They were pulling away, but I tell you who wasn’t pulling away, he was in the back of the field, it was Joe LaCava,” said John Wood, the reporter on the course with that group. “So I think he’ll keep it in his pocket just in case he needs it later. You don’t need to say anything now; you carry it in your pocket.”
The shot put certainly energized the international duo. Tom Kim made a putt from about 7 feet to tie the Americans at the 8th hole, and at the 9th he rolled in a birdie putt from over 30 feet to cut Cantlay and Schauffele’s lead to 1 up . On the 10th, Si Woo Kim birdied the fringe to tie the match. You can follow here.
