Toby Rhys-Jones and Grace Burrell star in the Essex XC League

The Mediterranean Round includes news from various county leagues across the UK.

ESSEX LEAGUE, 2nd match, Hainault Forest, November 8

Toby Rhys-Jones, who was fifth in the South England Under-20 Championships, led Southend clubmate Adam Hickey, whose club also added the senior men’s team title.

Grace Burrell, who has raced mainly in America in recent years, took victory in the women’s field and made it a second league in a row in the first race.

In the young athletes’ race, Brentwood Beagles’ Heidi Woodley won again in the under-15 girls’ race, but a clash with the London Junior Games put some of the juniors out of the running for the second winter league in these parts.

LONDON CHAMPIONSHIPS AND LONDON YOUTH GAMES, Parliament Hill, November 8.

Seifu Jamaal, who finished third in London Cross in 2022 and second in 2023, led London Heathside to team victory on a fairly dry surface. Alastair Aitken reports.

After a mile, he was up 30 meters with defending champion Andrew Penny and Samuel Greenstein.

Penny was a clear runner-up, but in third place was Olu Adedeji, who slipped into third place late after a tough morning session.

Although Jamaal was pleased with his result, he says his favorite event is the half marathon, where his PB is 63:33. He came to England from Ethiopia in 2005.

Emily Bradley, 25, was quick to admit that she had never won a race until London but was well coached by Charlie Dickinson with Belgrave Harriers, the team that won the day.

In the last half mile she pulled away from Ruby Carter who was close to her for the remainder of the run.
