Augusta, ga.-you can learn a lot from talking to people and watching some of the best players of the game nearby, especially in the country Masters week. Who looks good? Who are you grinding? There is always data – though sometimes they don’t tell the whole story.
Get 2017, for example. I was mind for my business walking Corner Late Wednesday afternoon, when the course is usually miraculously calm and empty. Most players have done their job prepared for the week by then, while others may be playing Hit-and-Giggle Par-3 competition.
Justin Rose was scheduled for a while par-3 that day, but he withdrew and instead was chosen for the last minute preparation in the second nine of Augusta. I was surprised when I saw him go out in the 13th hole playing a solo round with his cadet. My initial thoughts? He has to look for something, slamming so late during the day; I realized he was in trouble. No. He ended up second, losing to Sergio Garcia in a play off.
Sorting the top 10 master groups of 2025, from potential contenders to unknown
Or, take master on Tuesday in 2023. A 52-year-old Phil Mickelson told media that he had not scored as he wished but he its It has been seeing many positive signs and even made a bold pretense.
“I will try to be only patient,” Mickelson said. “Whether it’s this week or quickly – because things will click.”
He was tied up for the second five days later.
Then what does all this teach us? Until the balls are in the air come on Thursday, these things are impossible to predict.
But since it is on the eve of the day of opening masters, we asked our staff instead of digging into their notebooks and a plate in what they have seen in place so far this week. Who did they talk to? HAVEST HAVE THEM? We asked them for their last minute favorites to win the 2025 masters.
Master’s choices: Last -minute favorites from our staff to country
Nick Pastowski, Senior Editor: I’m still like Collin MorikawaMy choice from the beginning of the week. He is one of the best “second” golf shooters, and Augusta is a second course-and can be ripe for some notes if it rains on Friday. I also like this Nicolai Hojgaard Also recently visited Butch Harmon in Vegas. And I just have a shane feeling Lowry.
Sean Zak, senior writer: Jon Rahm will win this year’s masters. He has fallen into Liv, playing extremely strong golf and receiving no recognition for him. But his game makes so much sense here. The year of Rahm begins this week.
Josh Berhow, Managing Editor: I don’t know if it says anything important but it’s quite interesting how much MORE Shots Bryson Dechambeau hit on Tuesday than the rest of the field. Dechambeau Hit 393! Scottie Scheffler? He hit 62. I also said earlier this week I liked the form of Collin Morikawa and he has a small shoulder chip – his press conference on Tuesday an example of this – so he can be motivated. Top 10 in his last three masters. Final impartiality last year. He said on Wednesday his game feels good and he has a plan moving forward. I believe it. Maybe for a choice of sleep you might consider Michael Kim; His last three beginnings were not so special, but five ago were all the best or best and included three six top endings. He is working with Sean Foley now and Tuesday Foley pulled up for the upgrade of Kim.

Dylan Dothier, senior writer: Xander Schauffle looks healthy. Remember Xander? The guy who won two of the last three diplomas? He is going like, 20-1, compared to Scheffler at 4- or 5-1, because he has had questions about his rib, his rust, for his healing. And while Schauffle has not been heavy in the range, he seems to be moving well. I can’t promise he will win. But it seems more likely than not that he will be there Sunday.
Alan Bastable, Executive Editor: I am with Pastowski, with whom I mean I am with Morikawa, his world iron game and great shape. Two runners-up this season and no finish off top 20. He also seems to be still holding a chip on the shoulder with the media. Chips, when channeled, can be a powerful thing.
Zephyr Melton, Assistant Editor: I will not overthrow this. Scottie Scheffler will win his third green jacket in four years. It is a perfect adaptation for this course, and as long as it even has marginal success in the green, it is winning.
