Tim Tszyu reflects on 2024 losses, aims for greatness in 2025

Tim Tszyu took to Instagram today and told his 283,000 followers that 2025 is the year “We all become great.” Former WBO junior middleweight champion Tszyu (24-2, 17 KOs) admits that 2024 hasn’t been great for him, losing his title and scoring twice in a row.

First, he was beaten by Sebastian Fundora in a 12-round split decision on March 30. Then, on October 19, in Orlando, Florida, he was knocked out in the third round in an unsuccessful world title challenge against undefeated IBF 154-lb champion Bakhram Murtazaliev.

Tszyu’s loss to Murtazaliev was brutal, and it signaled his need to rebuild his career fighting local opposition in his native Australia.

Back to basics

It would be foolish for Tim to continue to fight the top five tier fighters at 154 because a third loss ruins him past the point of comeback. Mentally it would be tough, but the fans will completely give up on Tszyu if he loses his next contest.

In hindsight, it was a mistake for Tszyu to challenge Murtazaliev (23-0, 17 KOs) in his first fight back from a loss to Fundora. He should have taken a softer opponent than this guy, who is one of the hardest punchers in the division.

Murtazaliev’s strength and attacking skills may be too much for Terence Crawford, Fundora and Israil Madrimov. Tszyu should have known better than to trade power shots with this guy.

“2024 a year of adversity. I considered myself a rebound fighter, I didn’t care who was in front of me, I was willing to take on any one. Things don’t always go to script.. but that’s the best thing about boxing. What doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger. Appreciate everyone for the support. Sorry to let many down…I like to hit it off with the very best. And that is exactly what I will continue to do. And it goes on with whoever. Hope everyone has a happy and prosperous new year.
2025 is the year we all grow up. In whatever we do. Chase greatness and never stop believing!! See you all soon,” Tim Tszyu continued Instagram.
