Tim Bradley’s advice to Devin Haney: Go back to Mexico?

Tim Bradley wants former two-division world champion Devin Haney to return to Mexico, where he began his professional career in 2015. Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) fought 10 times against low-level opposition in Tijuana, Mexico before moving to the U.S.

Haney lost to Ryan Garcia by 12-round majority decision on April 20, and he looked weak in the chin department. His strength was also weak. Unfortunately, those things won’t change when Devin, 26, returns to Mexico to battle second- and third-tier opposition.

Humble pie in Tijuana?

Bradley fails to note that Haney now wants big money for his fights as he and his father, Bill, feel they have arrived. They want the bigger paydays for fighting top opposition in the US. They won’t want to take a dramatic pay cut by fighting in Mexico. I don’t see it as realistic.

Once fighters start making millions from their fights, they don’t want to go back to a big change like they did when they started their careers. Plus they hit hard in Mexico too, and those fighters will target Haney’s glass chin from the jump, looking to exploit that exposed Ryan Garcia.

“Devin Haney, do you want to come back? Go back to your roots, brother,” continues Tim Bradley Xgiving some pearls of wisdom to the recently beaten Devin Haney. “Go back to where you started. Where did you start? You started in Mexico. Go back and take one of those guys out of there, man.

“Go back there and start there. Get some of that humble pie. Go back to where you started. If you go back to where you started, I tell you. You come to come back to the top,” says Bradley.

Haney’s chin is not strong enough to take big shots from fighters in the sport. Going back to Mexico won’t magically solve that problem. One can only imagine what a Mexican slugger like Oscar Duarte would do to Devin if given the opportunity to fight him.

If it were that easy for fighters to restore their careers by fighting in Mexico, everyone would be doing it. That’s not how it works. The only thing Haney will accomplish by returning to Tijuana, Mexico is to pad his resume like he did before.
