At least briefly in the US over the weekend, TikTok was no more. This includes GOLF’s own TikTok account (which you can find here). While people have mixed feelings about the ban, one well-known professional not only supports it, she thinks it doesn’t go far enough.
Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to block a bipartisan bill that banned TikTok in the U.S. On Saturday, January 18, the ban went into effectwith TikTok suddenly unavailable to US users
The ban is controversial, with supporters arguing it’s a national security risk and avid users up in arms over losing their favorite app.
President-elect Donald Trump then announced he would move to delay the ban. On Sunday TikTok responded to X saying that they were beginning to restore service.
But just before TikTok was banned (and then unbanned), the LPGA star Charlie Hull addressed her army of Instagram followers. After accepting the ban, she suggested that society should now go “old school”, “ban all social media” and go back to using non-smartphones.
“TikTok is being banned, to be honest I think we all need to go back to old school,” Hull wrote, “stop all social media go back to a Nokia phone and live life in the moment.”
But why does Hull think we’d be better off banning all social media?
“Guarantee that the whole world would be a happier and healthier place,” Hull said to close the story.
For the record, Number of followers of Hull on Instagram stands at an impressive 712,000. Her fame has grown significantly in recent years, in no small part due to viral moments on social networks.
Most golf fans remember viral storm over Hull’s on-course smoking habit.
Golf as a whole has a mixed relationship with social media and the smartphones people use to access it. Augusta National still does not allow cell phones on the premises during Masters week. The same is true in many private clubs.
However, recreational players increasingly depend on cell phones for things like yardage. And the social media sphere of golf is growing exponentially.
The PGA Tour now includes cell phones and social media. A sea of phones captures every major moment of the tour, with fans covering the social channel with photos and videos afterwards.
In addition, new-look golf leagues such as TGL and LIV Golf have placed an emphasis on social media marketing and coverage. Meanwhile, Bryson DeChambeau has just become the latest YouTube golf star.
