Welcome Play awakeA regular golf.com game-improvement column that will help you become a smartest, best golf player.
There is an old golf cliché that says “drive for show (and) for dough”. And while the advanced analytics has put a little in that theory, it does not mean that you have to ignore the apartment.
Setting is an essential skill if you want to shoot lower results. Hitting the ball near the hole may be the most premium skill, but you need to be able to flip the ball in the cup to make birds. Otherwise you will simply be recognized as another flame with yips in green.
Golf may not be played like other sports, more reactive (think basketball or football), but that does not mean that you cannot apply some of the skills used by those who use athletes. In fact, if you add some reactivity to your golf game – especially in the greens – this can help you shoot lower results.
In the video below, Top 100 Golf teacher Dave Phillips explains how with a partition it Phil Mickelson called “Simple but excellent.”
‘Simple but brilliant’ by placing tips
It is easy to become frozen when standing on your ball lined to hit. But if you look at the best players in the world, they rarely fall victim to this. Why? Because they are always in line with their target.
“One thing I’ve always had is excellent speed control,” says Phillips. “And I think this because I’m always seeing where I want (the ball) go.”
Phillips uses a basketball player who shoots a free shot as an example. He explains that when a basketball player is preparing to shoot a free shot, they are always looking. Quarterbacks in football do the same when they fall back to pass. They are always looking at their target.
“So why wouldn’t we do it when we decide?” Says Phillips.
When deciding on a stroke – especially the delays that rely on the feeling – try to adopt this technique. As you are passing your pre-shop routine and preparing to hit the ball, stay in mind with your target. Channel your inner protector or shooting guard and you will be amazed at how easily it is to call at your speed.
