There are a lot of cool gadgets in the world of golf equipment that don’t always fit wellThe most requested testsORBuyers Guides. You still want to know how it works. In our We Tried it series, we put the equipment to the test and let you know if it works as advertised.
What we tried:
ofCanon Powershot Rangefinder. We’ve tested a lot of Nikon rangefinders, so it was finally time to add another famous name to the mix.
Who tried it:
Connor. Director of Content and resident sneakerhead. We shoot with Canon cameras in the office, so when I discovered that the Canon had a rangefinderi had to give it a spin. Hopefully, it can make my game look better than it actually is (that’s what a camera is for, right?)
What makes Powershot unique?

I’ve tested more than 25 ranges, and the Canon Powershot has a trick that can’t be matched by any other: it can record photos and video. Convenient, coming from a camera company. I have yet to see another range finder that offers this feature.
Even with the added functionality, the distance tracker should still work as a solid distance measurer to make my bag. How did the Powershot go?
Portability

Probably my favorite thing about Canon Powershot is its size. This thing is small. It can easily fit into a pocket when not in use, which is my favorite method of storage. I’d rather not have to take my spacer out of the cart every time I need it. Having him around is a godsend, especially on days when it’s just the cart path.
This mini rangefinder fits well even in my average sized hands. This is another bonus. Some other devices are a bit too #thick. It’s good to use a rangefinder that isn’t so “weird”.
Digital display

The Canon Powershot has a digital display. It takes some getting used to, but it offers a very clear field of view. It was easy to scan the course for potential hazards before you ended up in them anyway. If you’ve used the Garmin Approach Z82, you’ll find that the display and optics are very similar.

Speed and accuracy
A good spacer should be able to lock onto the flag quickly and efficiently every time. The Canon Powershot boasts stabilization (duh, Canon is a camera company), but I didn’t find it as stable as competing offerings from Nikon. Stabilization worked sometimes, but other times I had a hard time locking onto the flag.
Maybe I was a little dehydrated, but once my hands were shaking a little, it was harder than it needed to be. Fortunately, when hitting the flag, accuracy is solid and there wasn’t much trouble picking up objects behind the pin instead of the pin itself.
Camera quality

The question you’ve all been waiting for: What do photos and videos look like? Actually, very well. See for yourself.
It’s a tough sell, considering almost everyone has a fancy camera in their pocket at this point. But tThe wo-in-one nature of this diaspora/camera combo is a compelling feature that, especially at this price, is quite enticing.
I’m a geek for entertainment technology, so I had a photo and video blast of this little guy in between driving the green on a short par-4 and then putting three for par.
decision
Is the Canon Powershot taking my current meter out of the bag? Not enough. I like the price, size and screen. But the shaky stabilization was enough to keep me from absolutely loving my time with the Powershot.
Let’s put it into perspective. For $350, you’re getting a decent camera AND good spacer. It doesn’t excel at either, nor is it bad at either. of The Canon Powershot is a passable budget rangefinder with a nifty trick that no other current spacer can match.
