Tommy Fleetwood’s core workout is simple. He grabs an extension stick, lines it up with the angle of his shaft and attaches it to a device called Swing Plane Perfector. This gives him visual feedback on how he looks “on the plane” as he practices.
“(Using swing plane perfection) for me basically takes care of what I would probably struggle with the most in the early stages of my career, which would be shaft angle,” he said. “Keeps me cool on the plane too.”
It’s hard to argue with the results. IN last calendar year, Fleetwood has moved up to No. 3 on the OWGR, won his first PGA Tour event and claimed the FedEx Cup crown.
Not too weak.
But while Fleetwood’s training is excellent reinforcement for his swing, trying it yourself can have disastrous results. In the following video, GOLF Top 100 Teachers Cameron McCormick explains why.
Why you shouldn’t try Fleetwood’s workout
The Fleetwood Core Drill is a great visual on the shaft for top level players. However, for the vast majority of recreational players, this will do more harm than good.
“Good for professionals,” says McCormick. “Cancer for 98 percent of golfers.”
You see, recreational players rarely have the same swing flaws as the pros, so blindly copying their drills is foolish. In this case, Fleetwood uses the pitching stick to give him a picture of the proper swing plane and help him not go under that spot.
Recreational golfers usually have the opposite problem. They usually come a long way from OUTSIDE and swing over.
“It’s just going to make you move up more and hold it more,” McCormick says.
What should you do instead?
Grab a couple of extension sticks and place one on the ground below the target line, and the other sticking up from the ground at a 45-degree angle parallel to the target line at knee height, with its end resting just above the ball. Now take the third extension stick and stick it to the ground in front of the ball at a 45 degree angle splitting the gap between the target line and your lead hip.
“Then you swing and miss the sticks,” McCormick says. “It’ll make you draw for days.”
