My simple advice is to approach the ball uncomfortably. With a shocked lie, I crouch. Then hang the club straight up on your backswing, which will increase your ability to create a lot of slope on the way back to the ball.
Slope is your best bet for getting out of most bunker lie difficulties. Once you create this slope, your goal is for the club to enter the sand a few inches behind the ball. This is critical.
Your follow up? Not so much – you don’t need to do much with your swing once the ball is in the air. Open the club face at the address to match the amount of green you have to work with. Less green, more loft.
