This common swing flaw is costing you power. Here’s how to fix it

Top 100 GOLF teacher Brian Mogg says keeping your head behind the ball on the stroke can lead to more power. Here's how it should look

What a golfer it doesn’t do you want to gain more power? The problem is, adding meters without losing stability can be a difficult task if you don’t have good foundations.

But bombing isn’t just about increasing movement speed or using ground force — it’s also about the right attitude, which allows your body to wrap the right way before you “settle” as you descend through the impact.

A common mistake that amateurs make, however, is diving towards the ball to try and swing harder, which often leads to head diving and poor stance. This is something I used to do a lotbut they have since fixed the problem (mostly!) over the last year or two.

When you dip your head or shoulder in the swing, it can throw off your club path and cause a host of other mistakes. So eliminating this movement is essential.

Use your core to get more power in the golf swing

So what is the key to generating more energy? GOLF Top 100 Teachers Brian Mogg says it starts with using your core more often and avoiding the common mistake I mentioned above: moving your head forward.

“One of the things I see amateur players do a lot is they try to get more power by dipping their head forward, which puts them in front of the ball,” says Mogg.

How can you fix the problem, improve your posture and start hitting the ball with more confidence? Mogg says it starts with keeping the leading arm behind the ball at the stroke.

Every golfer wants more driving power, but how should it feel? Top 100 GOLF Teacher Mike Dickson says this high sensation is the answer

For more swing power, feel like you’re throwing an uppercut

“You want to feel like the front of your face—the left side for a right-handed golfer—is behind the ball at impact,” says Mogg. “Left ear, left cheek, left eye. Then I’ll go down and let the club drop (the ball). Don’t let your head sway forward.”

It sounds simple, but Mogg says it’s a big factor in gaining power.

“It’s just a good solid tip so your head stays centered and the club can be fully released with your body providing the power, not your head,” he says.
