Top 5 tips for 2026: Find more freeways
If your golf game is anything like mine (let’s hope it’s not), you need to find the fairway much more.
Rory McIlroy said that one of his the biggest keys for amateur players to lower their scores means they don’t try to hit shots they can’t make. The need to attempt the “hero strike” usually arises when you are out of position. If you find yourself more on the fairway, the need to try shots you shouldn’t try should decrease.
So what’s the key to putting the ball in the short grass more often in 2026? Top 100 GOLF Teacher Kellie Stenzel says finding the freeway comes down to a few things.
“Finding the fairway, like most solid golf swings, comes from basic setup and being in balance throughout the swing,” Stenzel said. “Something just as essential as a good grip so that the clubface is square at impact makes it much easier to aim properly and encourages a proper swing path. Being balanced at address and throughout the golf swing is certainly key to making solid contact and finishing in the fairway.”
According to Stenzel, there’s a simple practical exercise to help you fine-tune your balance and control and make sure you’re finding more fairways in 2026.
“A great practice technique is to hit the balls with your feet close together as this will force you to be efficient and stay balanced,” Stenzel said. “Extend this practice into the swing and try to hold your bottom until the golf ball drops. If you are balanced at the start and throughout your swing to finish, your chances of hitting the fairway are very high.”
So when you’re grinding this winter in preparation for the 2026 golf season, work on your balance and control and find more fairways in the New Year.
