The Wrexham manager confirms the club expect to be “busy” in the January transfer window

Wrexham expect to be busy in the upcoming January transfer window as the ambitious Welsh club set their sights firmly on rapid promotion to the Championship.

The club, co-owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have moved from the National League to League One, from the fifth to the third tier, in the last two seasons. But they have already made light work of the top tier, two points off the automatic promotion places.

Wrexham manager Shaun Harvey is a household name in the football world at large Welcome to Wrexhamhas explained that the Red Dragons will be active in trying to strengthen themselves both for a promotion push and also to survive/prosper in the next league.

“Rob and Ryan have always supported Phil (Parkinson’s) ambition. We will be active in the transfer market in January because we are in a position of strength,” Harvey said at an event this week, via Wales Online.

“If we go further from where we are now, we get promotion, and that’s the aim. It’s hard to say what and where, because there’s still six weeks left before the window opens.

“Then it’s a case of who’s available and who’s going to really strengthen us. We’ve had a policy of trying to get players in, not just for this division but for the next one as well.”

Harvey is even hopeful that Wrexham will no longer be stung by premium contracts, having previously been forced to pay over the odds to convince players to drop down the divisions.

“Fortunately, it’s easier now the higher we go in the leagues, because the players never wanted to go down. We had to pay for that privilege and we called it the non-league tax,” he said.

“Where we are now is that there are players who would come to play for Wrexham in League One who wouldn’t play for any other club in that division. That’s what we’ve been able to create, so I suspect we’ll be busy.”

League One is very competitive this season, with just six points separating current leaders Wycombe Wanderers and sixth-placed Barnsley in the last of the play-offs.

Wrexham aren’t alone in their rapid rise to the top of the division either. Stockport County won them last season’s League Two title and they are just one point behind after winning the game between the sides last weekend. Mansfield Town were also promoted and are one win away from the play-offs with at least two games in hand on the four teams immediately above them.
