The Women’s Bangladesh Premier League (WBPL) is set to debut in February with three teams

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is all set to launch the first women’s Bangladesh Premier League (WBPL) immediately after the conclusion of the ongoing men’s BPL.

The inaugural edition of the Women’s Bangladesh Premier League (WBPL) will be held from February 8 to 15 and will feature three teams in the tournament. Each team will play the others twice in six league matches before the final match.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) women’s wing chairman Nazmul Abedin confirmed the start of WBPL next month and said they are ready to start the league with three teams this year. Earlier, BCB considered four teams for the Women’s Bangladesh Premier League, but they felt that three teams would be more competitive.

Cricbuzz, Nazmul Abedin said, “The plan is to have (WBPL) with three teams. A sufficient pool of talented players is needed to organize a quality tournament. Going beyond three teams will reduce the quality. “Although we considered four teams, we decided that this format is more appropriate.”

Abedin emphasized that the Bangladesh Cricket Board is not hosting the Women’s Bangladesh Premier League for financial reasons only, but they aim to raise the standard of women’s cricket in the country through this exciting competition.

The BCB chairman further stated, “Our focus is not only on conducting the tournament for financial gain but also to improve the standard of women’s cricket. The competition of three teams will be more competitive. This will take place shortly after the end of the men’s BPL, which lasts eight to nine days. “Discussions have already been held with the franchises and they want to participate.”

Meanwhile, the Women’s Bangladesh Premier League is set to debut a unique team composition that allows only one foreign player in each XI. Each of the three participating teams will have to select 15 domestic players, leaving the quota of foreign players open to bring an international flavor to the WBPL.

Financial issues will not affect Women’s BPL: Nazmul Abedin

On the other hand, Nazmul Abedin, who is also the secretary of the BPL governing council, insisted that WBPL will not have a salary problem like BPL. Recently, BPL side Durbar Rajshahi players protested against the franchise owners over unpaid salaries.

Nazmul Abedin, “We are committed to carefully solving technical and financial issues. These issues will not affect women’s BPL. There were doubts that we could organize this BPL successfully. A lot of franchises have gone through transitions and we took risks. Although some areas are not going as planned, we aim to solve these problems.”
