The La Liga match between Valencia and Real Madrid scheduled for Saturday has been postponed due to the severe flooding that has affected eastern Spain.
At least 95 people have died in what has been called the country’s worst natural disaster in decades. Some areas saw half a year’s worth of rain fall in several hours, leaving homes, buildings and cars ruined in the eastern Valencian Community.
Authorities in the worst-hit regions have told people to stay at home and avoid all non-essential travel.
Cancellation of the match was scheduled for Wednesday and the decision has already been made official.
A statement from Valencia says: “Valencia has received confirmation of the postponement of the The League Game of the 12th day, initially scheduled for this Saturday, November 2, due to the severity of the DANA that has left numerous fatalities and affected in the province of Valencia.
“In these difficult moments we want to express our deepest condolences and our love to the families and friends of the deceased and to those affected by this catastrophe that has left us devastated and put football on the back burner.”
Madrid supporters have pointed in the direction of a fundraising campaign to raise funds for those affected.
“Given the devastating situation caused by DANA in many areas of our country, especially in the Valencian Community, the Real Madrid Foundation and the Red Cross have joined in a fundraising campaign aimed at supporting those affected.
“This catastrophe has put many families in a critical situation and it is essential to act quickly and in solidarity. Every contribution can go a long way to help those who have lost everything.
