The Sky Sports pundit fears for Tottenham after what he saw before the game

Tottenham host Liverpool in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final on Wednesday night, with the contest offering Ange Postecoglou a great chance to win a trophy this season.

The 2024/25 campaign has been very underwhelming for Spurs, with the north London club currently sitting 12th in the Premier League with just seven wins from 20 games. Expectations would have been much higher than that, but cup competitions have been a different story.

Tottenham are in a good position to qualify for the next round of the UEFA Europa League, have an easy draw in the FA Cup and reach the semi-finals of the EFL Cup.

Premier League leaders Liverpool are up against Postecoglou’s side and a trip to Wembley. Arne Slot has opted to play a strong side for the first leg, something former Spurs defender Michael Dawson hoped the Dutch manager would not do.

The Sky Sports pundit has admitted he fears for the London club after seeing the Reds’ starting eleven ahead of kick-off, having witnessed Liverpool hit their old club just before Christmas.

“The way Tottenham have been has not been good enough. Ange Postecoglou will know that,” said Dawson Sky Sports. “There are many reasons behind it, you have to look at the injuries they have, the way they play. I was here for the 6-3 game before Christmas and if it goes like this I fear for Tottenham.

“Liverpool, when you look at the squad and how strong they’ve been, I was hoping they might have been a bit weaker like they did in the last round against Southampton.”

Given Tottenham’s league form, cup competitions could determine whether Postecoglou stays on as Spurs boss next season. Champions League qualification looks highly unlikely for the London club at the moment, but fans would consider the campaign a success if a trophy comes their way.

The Carabao Cup offers the Australian manager a great opportunity to do just that and a win against Liverpool on Wednesday night would ease the questions that have been asked about the former Celtic boss in recent weeks.
