The rider who won the title against Marc Marquez did not make it to MotoGP


Marc Marquez rarely beats. Since his move to MotoGP, only two riders have beaten the Spaniard in a full season.

Jorge Lorenzo beat his Yamaha teammate Valentino Rossi in 2015 Marquez Completing the third. Nine years later, rider #93 picked up another bronze medal as he trailed Jorge Martin and Francesco Bagnaian.

In the year In 2024, Marquez could point to a specification difference – he rode a Ducati GP23 while his rivals were on contemporary machines. He was completely ineligible for the first four years of the decade.

Excluding injuries, Marquez’s 100% top-three record in the 2009 season, riding in the 125cc class (now Moto3).

Although Julian Simon has won the Grand Prix title, he has never reached MotoGP

Marquez needed time to show his potential when he entered the Grand Prix race. He only finished 13th in his first year.

He took a step forward in his second year, cracking the top 10, but fell short of fellow Spaniard Julian Simon.

Simon Having been racing Grand Prix bikes since 2002, he was more seasoned and experienced. He won his first championship in 2009 at the age of 22 after taking seven wins and 12 podiums from 16 starts.

It was a high-quality field that included Marquez, Pol Espargaro, Andrea Iannone, Stefan Bradl and Yohan Zarco. Simon gained promotion to Moto2 on the back of his success and immediately finished runner-up to Toni Elias.

He was well on his way to becoming a MotoGP star when he broke his leg three times in Barcelona. Although the injury only kept him out of action for three weekends, he has not been in good form.

Simon stayed in Moto2 until 2017 but managed just four more podiums as his premier class dreams faded.

In that 2009 title-winning season, Simeone sealed victory in Barcelona in spectacular fashion. He crossed the line saying he had won the race, but there was still a round to go.

A celebrating Simon realized he had made a mistake and fell off the podium as Iannone took the win.

Simon will be a rider coach at Yamaha, working with riders such as Maverick Vinales and 2021 world champion Fabio Quatararo.
