Tom Hoge had a bad week, not much fun TPC Sawgrass.
Or, more accurately, maybe he just had a miserable time on the Stadium’s par-4 7th hole on Friday.
Hoge made a five-bogey 9 on the 7th during his second round, good for five over par on the hole alone. This was enough to send him crashing down the leaderboard and miss the cut for the first time in his eight Players Championship appearances.
Hoge entered the week as a sneaky pick to play well. In addition to never missing here, he tied for third twice in the last three years. He opened with a one-over 73 on Thursday and was even for the tournament when he tied for 7th on Friday.
That’s when disaster struck.
He hit his first shot in the water and had to pitch about 50 yards short of the tee box. He then putt his next round through rough fairways and into a difficult layup on a hill between the bunker and the water.
This was followed by a whistle on the carriageway, a pitch and an approach into a bunker. He blasted to about 5 feet – but missed the putt. He touched for 9.
Hoge followed up with a bogey on the next hole, and he played the back nine in three, signing for an eight-over 80, nine weeks and the trip home early.
