The president of Barcelona, Joan Laporta, has confirmed that the club is in talks with Ronald Araujo, Pedri and Frenkie de Jong about new contracts.
Araujo put pen to paper on his current deal in 2022, with the club tying down their star centre-back to a four-year contract. The Uruguayan, however, has been heavily linked with a to move away from Barça in recent months due to interest from Premier League clubs Manchester United and Chelsea.
De Jong has been similarly linked with a move to the Premier League in recent times. The midfielder’s current contract in Catalonia also runs until 2026.
Pedri’s contract also runs until 2026, and the injured midfielder was finally able to string together a string of games in Barcelona’s line-up, with nine starters in all competitions this season.
During his inaugural speech at FC Barcelona’s Ordinary General Assembly, club president Laporta confirmed that talks between Barça and the representatives of the three players are ongoing and revealed: “We are working on the new contracts for Araujo, De Jong and Pedri”.
Laporta also took advantage of the speech to respond to the criticism of the club, especially regarding the ongoing Negreira case: “Our anthem says it like this: we fight against everything and everyone. This is not victimhood. We fight against those who repeatedly say that they are appealing the Negreira case that we are winning in court.
“Now that we are being judged, the instructions are not favorable. Every time we do well, it comes out again. There are people who do not want us to win, they are angry because we win. To defend ourselves, we cannot show weakness. They want to destroy us .We are brave and strong. We must fight against these elements where they come from and what they seek.
Barça were charged with “active bribery” by Barcelona’s District Court No. 1 in 2023, with an ongoing court case over the charges.
