The most impressive thing about this golf ball may not be the speed

Through early testing, one of the things that impressed our team most about Callaway’s new Chrome Touring Golf Ball it was the increase in speed.

But during a recent test session, Fully Equipped co-host Jake Morrow discovered there might be something else.

“But the thing was, I kept having moments where I’d turn around and look at (Fully Equipped Social Media Manager) Adam (Christensen) and I was like, wow, it was like super off the toe or it was super off the heel,” Morrow said. “And then we would look at the data. And there was one ball at one point that I hit with the Triple Diamond Max and I was 18 in the heel and 12 down. And the ball rolled 2,700.”

Morrow explained that he would normally expect such a hit to see a massive jump in spin, over 3,000. But with New Chrome Tour, the rotation was staying in a good place.

The same thing happened on the other side when Morrow hit a drive high in the face, expecting the rpm to drop below 2000. But it was at 2400, a big number for a mistake.

Then he turned to Chrome X tour and the spin variance was even tighter.

“I need to know why, because right now the story is that the ball is really fast, but I’ve gone through so many golf balls because they’re fast,” Morrow said. “I actually don’t think the speed of these golf balls is the right story to tell. It’s the consistency and durability of these golf balls.”

What also puzzled Morrow is that golf balls seemed to behave similarly; why did both have to exist? Why didn’t they split further?

“If 80% of these things remain stable,” Morrow said, “then you have very, very specific parameters of j.use these little things to choose from.
