#The Journeyto Compete, Interview #6. Woody Kincaid, Swoosh Track Club, explains how to be better at cross country.

Woody Kincaid made two Olympic teams (2021 Tokyo and 2024 Paris), two World Championships (Eugene 2022 and Budapest 2023).

Inside, outside and in the hallway, you’d better have plenty of space on Woody Kincaid if you’re going to stay out of his withering hitting spots.

In 2021, Woody Kincaid used that stroke to win the U.S. 10,000-meter track title.

A state champion at Columbine High School in Colorado, Woody then went on to the prestigious University of Portland, where he won several All-American titles. Under Jerry Schumacher at the Bowerman Track Club, Woody began to blossom as a tough athlete in the 5.00 meters and 10,000 meters. Woody has had some good coaches: Rob Connor at the University of Portland, Jerry Schumacher at the Bowerman Track Club (2016-2022) and since 2023 Mike Smith in Flagstaff.

Woody Kincaid is part of the new NIKE club, Swoosh TC, based in Flagstaff and coached by Mike Smith and Rachel Smith.

Woody has some serious speed, as his PBs can attest. 3000m in 7:38.31, 5000m in 12:54.40 outdoors and 12:51.61 5000m indoors (then a North American record).

Woody also won the Sound Running 10,000m. Woody likes to compete. His 10,000m PB is 26:57.57 in Sound Running The TEN famous race from 2024.

Woody told RunBlogRun that he’s looking down the road a bit, maybe moving toward a marathon. We understand the desire to find space on the roads, but we’re sure he runs cross country and keeps running, he’s so much fun to watch race.

We asked Woody for a tip on running for middle schoolers, and here’s what he had to say:

  • Larry Eder has been involved in athletics for 52 years. Larry has experienced sports as an athlete, coach, magazine publisher, and now a journalist and blogger. His first article, about Don Bowden, America’s first 4-minute miler, was published in RW in 1983. Larry has published several magazines on athletics, from USA Track and Field to the American version of Spikes magazine. He currently leads content and marketing development for RunningNetwork, The Shoe Addicts, and RunBlogRun. On RunBlogRun, his daily pilgrimage with the sport, Larry says: “I have to admit, I love traveling to long-distance meets, writing about the sport I love and the athletes I respect, for my readers at runblogrun.com, the most I’ve ever done besides running.” Also does some updates for BBC Sports at major events which he really enjoys.
