The hardest shot in golf? Lee Trevino’s nomination will surprise you

Lee Trevino’s thought process on the range is very simple: “Every shot you hit should have a purpose.” That’s what he told our Dylan Dethier in the latest episode of HEATin which the golfing legend spoke – and talked a lot — through nearly a dozen lessons in just half an hour.

At the beginning of the video, while hitting small punches on a nearby green, he destroys what he believes is the hardest shot in golf.

“The hardest shot in golf is when you get into the trees on the right and you can’t get down to the flag and you have to go across the fairway to lay,” he said. “The hardest shot in golf is getting a wedge or whatever club you’re going to get out from under the trees to get to the fairway – and nobody would think that – and the hardest shot in golf is how hard you hit it . that ball to clear the rough here, but then stop it before it goes into the rough (on the other side)?”

Dethier, our host, clarified Trevino’s claim. “Hardest shot in golf?” he asked.

“That’s the hardest shot in golf other than the 60-yard bunker shot,” Trevino said. “And you have to get out of foul trouble, and you’re laying down, so you need the ball in the fairway, and people are going to hit it too low, never get out of the rough. Or they hit it too hard and go rough on the other side. So this is something you should practice. You can’t just go out on the range and hit golf balls. You have to have a purpose.”

It’s not that practice with a goal line again.
