The Gunners opted not to sign any strikers in the summerbelieving that Jesus and Kai Havertz would be enough to push them to a Premier League title.
But it has been a mixed season so far and such a feat seems unlikely. While Manchester City have their own problems on the pitch, Arsenal are still far from catching up with league leaders Liverpool.
Arsenal’s need for a new striker made even more desperate
The club’s fans have shown their disapproval of their failure to sign a new striker, but their hand could now be forced during the January transfer window.
Jesus’ injury could see the club rethink their strategy and look to make a major mid-season addition.
A name that has been the Gunners closely linked to is Alexander Isak of Newcastle. He is believed to be the perfect addition to the north London club.
But Athletic reporter David Ornstein threw cold water on him by suggesting they might even pay him.
talking The Athletic FC podcastOrnstein said: “I think we should set our sights on Alexander Isak. We’ve seen how incredibly good he is when he’s fit and in a rhythm.
“There doesn’t seem to be any progress on a new contract. Newcastle have him for a few more years, and that maybe opens up an opportunity for clubs to make a push. “He’s someone that clubs have been looking at very closely. in the past Arsenal, for example, tried to sign him when he was at Real Sociedad, they didn’t end up doing it and he went to Newcastle.
“Mikel Arteta is a known admirer of his and I think in an ideal world if they had their selection of strikers and money wasn’t a factor I think Arsenal would seriously consider going for him. But finances are an issue and he he’s going to cost a lot of money and he’s spent a lot of time out injured.”
