First, you need to identify the dead side of the cup, which should be quite easy. It will be the side that is brown and almost chewed. If you run your hand across the edge of the cup – not during your round of course – you should notice that the grass falls at the bottom.

Next, identify the healthy side of the cup, which should also be quite clear. This side is likely to be very green and the edge should be sharp. If you run your hand across the side – again, not while the lion – no bar should fall away.

“This is telling me that water is moving from here (healthy side) below this direction (to the dead side),” says McLachlin. “The water is caught on this upper side, not doing it on the bottom. That is why (the dead Cup side) is breaking down and turning into coffee.

“This is one of the ways we can say to the ball will break down to this coffee side. The water is trying to include this direction, so at any time you get in a green Bermuda and you see a brown side or a whitewashed side or is worn quite a bit in this end, you know that the ball will want to break that direction.”
