Enzo Fernández may face an uncertain future at Chelsea as the World Cup winner appears to have fallen out of favor with new Blues manager Enzo Maresca.

The World Cup winner has done it he did not start the last two Premier League games for the West London club and having played 90 minutes in midweek against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup, the midfielder is unlikely to feature on the outside when Enzo Maresca’s side travel to Old Trafford to play Man United on Sunday.

The Italian manager preferred Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia as his two pivots against Liverpool and Newcastle last week, and this has raised concerns over Fernandez’s future as it is not usual to leave a £106.8 million player on the bench, that Todd Boehly and co. he won’t be excited.

Speaking ahead of Friday’s Man United clash, Maresca explained his decision to start Lavia and Caicedo the last two times in the league.

“Romeo Lavia and Caicedo give us physicality, strength in the middle,” the Chelsea manager said via Fabrizio Romano. “When we play with Enzo, it has to be Enzo and one between Moi and Romeo.

“When Enzo moves, we fight in the middle with the physicality. At this point, Moi and Romeo give us that.”

Is Enzo Fernández’s future at Chelsea under threat?

This appears to be a problem for Fernández, as being strong is not something the Argentine star can fix without compromise. The midfielder could put on more muscle, but will that slow him down even more?

Maresca’s comments hint that the 23-year-old could spend some time on the bench and that is something the World Cup winner will not be happy about.

Despite this, the Chelsea manager has also said he still has confidence in the former Benfica star, who will offer the player hope for his future at Stamford Bridge.

“I still trust Enzo Fernandez, there is no reason to lose faith in him. For sure he will play many games”, admitted Maresca Fabrizio Romano. “The reason why he is not playing in the Premier League is because I made a different decision. My trust is 100% with Enzo”.
