For the first time in 25 years, Congress not only honors Muhammad Ali with words – they are actually trying to fix the corrupt mess he left behind. The new dual Ali Revival Act (HR 4624) would give fighters a way to enforce the sanction bodies, a national pay floor and eventually provide legal health coverage. No more fighting for peanuts. No longer charged just to be arranged. And no longer pretend that box is good when it clears from the bottom to top.
What’s actually in this thing?
The great idea is something called Unified Boxing Organizations (Ubos) – a new system that works Along the usual alphabet soup (WBC, WBA, etc.). Boxers are free to choose. Want to keep playing the rankings? Continue. Do you want a better minimum payment, safety guarantees, no sanctions and no shady politics? Try the UBO route.
Some of the outstanding changes:
-
$ 150 minimum per round
-
$ 25,000 injury coverage
-
No ranking or title fees
-
Complete counter-dipping and anti-argument policies
-
Better medical staff and training injury protection
It’s not perfect, but it’s a light years ahead that most prospects now get, which is usually a late-night text that offers $ 600 and a ticket for nowhere.
What people actually say
Congressman Brian Jack says the bill is about boxing ‘a framework for innovation’. Sharice Davids, a former MMA fighter, said it more bluntly:
“It’s about giving boxers the protection and freedom of choice they deserve.”
Lonnie Ali – yes, the wife of Muhammad – also endorsed it. She said the sport gave her husband a platform to fight for civil rights, and that he would be proud to see boxing that was used again to help and not use fighters.
Even the association of boxing commissions supported it and called the bill a long -lasting solution for a sport that treats young fighters like cannon feed.
Will it pass by? Perhaps. Will promoters hate it? Definitely. But for once, the conversation is not about pay-per-viewing or influencing non-not-it is about fighters who get a good shake.
And if nothing else, it finally gives boxers something they didn’t have in decades: a choice.
