The central Barcelona player, Íñigo Martínez, has insisted that it is “good” if Nico Williams continues to develop with the current entrepreneur of the Athletic Club.
Williams was one of Barca’s top targets this summer but, after a well-publicised search, the winger ultimately decided to reject all interest for his services, including from Arsenal and Chelsea. in favor of staying.
The second day of the League brought together the two teams and Barça fans did not hide their frustrations with Williams’ decision, booing the 22-year-old from the first whistle to the last.
Former Athletic defender Martinez tried to play for peace after the game, insisting that Williams will become an excellent player regardless of his club.
“Nico will continue to grow, if he is in another team, good and if he is in Athletic, also good,” he said. “The decision will always be his. I will support him in whatever it takes at every moment.”
After Barca’s final victory, Williams was seen hugging Barcelona boss Hansi Flick, who was predictably asked about his conversation with the 22-year-old.
“I just congratulated him on the Euros,” Flick said of the Spanish superstar. “I don’t like to talk about rivals.”
Williams remains on Barca’s radar, but hopes of a late bid appear to have faded, with the Catalan giants still struggling to sign new signing Dani Olmo.
Ilkay Gundogan has rejoined Manchester City, Mikayil Faye was sold to Rennes and both Vitor Roque and Clement Lenglet have left on loan, but Barça still do not have the salary space needed to sign the midfielder.
