The analysis of the controversial lightweight ranking of the Ring Magazine: Why Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson do not deserve toppoints

The ring came out today with their new lightweight rankings, with Gerrvonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson on #1 and #2. The rankings make little sense based on recent performances by those fighters and many others in their top -10. The two belong nowhere near the top two places on the rank’s rankings.

Andy Cruz: True Lightweight King

The true #1 in the lightweight section is Andy cruz. He showed in a short period that he is the best in the weakened division of 135 pounds and that he must occupy the king’s seat as #1.

Schofield, Mason: 24k Gold Prospects

To sit on the King’s Table for #2 and #3, I have Floyd Schofield and Abdullah Mason. These two showed that they are pure 24k gold in their performances.

Ring’s top 10 defects

  1. Gevonta Davis
  2. Shakur Stevenson
  3. William Zepeda
  4. Raymond Muratalla
  5. Andy cruz
  6. Floyd Schofield
  7. Frank Martin
  8. Denys Berinchyk
  9. Sam noakes
  10. Abdullah Mason

Frank Martin has not fought for more than a year since his knockout loss to Tank Davis, and he is expected to move to 140. He should not be on the ring list for these reasons.

Sam Noakes does not belong in the top 10 because he mostly beat British household level in his career. He looks like an average fighter.

Gervonta Davis: Demotion to #5

Tank (30-0, 28 COs) did not strike a quality fighter in years and comes from a controversial draw against the super-featherweight Lamont Roach. For this reason, Davis must lose a line and be demoted after #5. Even that ranking is still too high, given the way Gervonta has swung on the top-level opposition since winning his WBA lightweight belt.

Shakur (23-0, 11 COs) does not belong anywhere near the #2 place based on his mediocre opposition since coming up to lightweight. In the one decent opponent who fought Stevenson at 135, Edwin de Los Santos, he was terrible. He has since fought no living bodies. As such, Shakur must be downgraded to #9.

My improved lightweight ranking

  1. Andy cruz
  2. Floyd Schofield
  3. Abdullah Mason
  4. William Zepeda
  5. Gevonta Davis
  6. Herrera Cores
  7. Raymond Muratalla
  8. Edwin de Los Santos
  9. Shakur Stevenson
  10. Denys Berinchyk
