Terence Crawford says he’s not “chasing” Canelo Alvarez, as many believe that’s the reason he pushed for that fight. Four-division world champion Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) says he sees Canelo as the “most skilled warrior” next to himself and would like to face him.
Not rushing, challenging
Crawford should push for that fight because it would allow the two top North American fighters to battle it out in a match that can generate interest, make money and entertain the public.
Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs) has frequently disappointed fans in the past two years since his loss to Dmitry Bivol. People would love to see the Mexican star put on an interesting fight against someone they want to see him fight. Canelo didn’t want to face David Benavidez or David Morrell when they were both at 168.
Has Canelo lost his nerve?
Those fights would have kept Alvarez at the top, against the best, but he slacked off and showed no desire to test himself. You can tell that Canelo has lost his nerve and is showing fear by choosing not to take on the challenges he once did.
The second fight with Gennady Golovkin in 2018 was the last time fans saw Alvarez face an opponent where the outcome wasn’t lopsided in his favor. People forget that the Bivol fight was considered a sure win for Canelo. The Russian fighter struggled in a rematch against Craig Richards and looked mediocre against Umar Salamov.
The 37-year-old Crawford will be a lesser risk to Canelo compared to Benavidez or Morrell due to his lack of size, strength and age. Still, it’s an excellent fight that Americans and Mexican fans want.
“I wouldn’t say I’m chasing Canelo. I think that is a broad statement. I just want the opportunity to fight the best fighter in my generation there is,” said Terence Crawford Box Social on why he wants to fight Canelo Alvarez.
“He is the most skilled fighter in boxing today, other than myself. I just want another big fight. That’s it, that’s it. If the fight happens, I think it will be the biggest fight in boxing today,” Crawford said of his reason for wanting to challenge Canelo.
