Teofimo Lopez showed up at the weigh-in for Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga to use the timeline to call out Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis and other notable fighters he has little chance of ever fighting.
Teofimo is really thirsty. Tank Davis is not going to fight Teofimo because they are too far apart in weight, and he has more popular fighters available. Teofimo has not fared well in his recent fights against Steve Claggett, Jamaine Ortiz, Sandor Martin and Pedro Campa.
WBO light welterweight champion Teofimo (21-1, 13 KOs) volunteered on December 14 to be WBA ‘ordinary’ lightweight champion Gervonta’s next opponent.
Teofimo’s approach to calling out Tank sounded like he was begging him for a payday, and that’s not a good look for him career-wise.
It’s about money for Teofimo, as he rehydrates to nearly 160 pounds for his fights at 140, and he shouldn’t be fighting anyone at 135. If Teofimo wants to test himself against a lightweight, he needs to prove himself by fighting William Zepeda or Andy Cruz.
It is unclear why Teofimo waited so long to call him out. He should have done so after Vasily Lomachenko announced that he was taking the rest of the year off and would not be available to fight in November or December.
According to promoter Leonard Ellerbe, Tank is already considering two fighters for his next fight. One is rumored to be Jose ‘Rayo’ Valenzuela, who recently dethroned WBA light welterweight champion Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz on August 3rd.
“Hey, Tank, fight me, bro. He doesn’t fight, I don’t fight. what’s going on I don’t like people saying I duck someone. Why am I hitting him? Because I’m the takeover, that’s why,” Teofimo Lopez told the mediaand called Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis.
Teofimo is too big to return to lightweight to fight Davis. He’ll probably try for the money, but he’ll be in bad shape if he does make weight. If Tank were to fight Teofimo, he would likely insist on a rehydration clause to ensure Teo doesn’t balloon to middleweight.
